What Is Tales of the Fabulist?

For thousands of years, people have gathered socially in caves, around campfires, around kitchen tables. Since humans could talk, the favorite form of entertainment has been storytelling–and most of it was made up nonsense. It’s not quite a lost art, but most people don’t feel comfortable or creative enough to tell a fish tale or spin a yarn without a little help.

Tales of the Fabulist is a quick and easy way to beguile your friends with gut-busting laughter while fanning the tiny creative spark that we’ve all neglected. A whole round plays in 6 minutes. It's a party game, an improvisation system, a drinking game, an interactive fiction device, an ice-breaker at retreats, the best family game night experience ever, and an excellent gift for that person you want to get something for, but don't know what. You don’t have to be William Shakespeare to have a great time making sh*t up regaling your loved ones with a fabricated fable.

How to Play

There’s never a dull moment in Tales of the Fabulist. Everyone at the table participates in every story. Unlike other party games, Tales is short and sweet. It’s exactly a 6-minute engagement per story, and course changes come rapid-fire. Also, each character has its own sense of charismatic humor and exudes a charm that sparks creativity.

Run as many stories as you like, they are never the same. Really!  The game can handle 2-10 players and can be played competitively or not, depending on the crowd.

START WITH THE DEAL

Deal out a quest card and two character cards on the playmat and two plot twists to each player. Then the starting player has one minute to start telling the story.

PASS IT ALONG

Pass the story to the next player, and watch as it goes wildly, hysterically off course.

After a few turns, you won't know how you got where you are, but everyone is so busy laughing, it doesn't matter.

END WITH THE MORAL

Every fable ends with a moral. Everyone gets to chime in with their own moral of the story, and the funniest one wins!

I like it, and I think a lot of other people will too. Most importantly, each time we’ve played it - all participants have laughed so much more than any of us anticipated, and even the best games don’t manage that. We’ve had a great silly time.
